GIO to Host Muslim Women’s Colloquium on 25-26th February 2017February 17, 2017
A Muslim Women’s Colloquium International Conference hosted by Girls Islamic Organisation, Kerala will be held on 25-26th February 2017 in Kozhikode. It will provide a platform to critically assess and evaluate Muslim women’s politics, history, Muslim women narratives, movements and other related subjects.
Numerous studies and debates about life of Muslim women are taking place across the globe. Rights of Muslim women, identity, subject, feminist reading of Islamic tenets are the subjects dealt with in such discussions. The arguments that Muslim woman are oppressed by men and on the other hand, she is free and guaranteed all rights are out rightly termed clichés. But, going beyond these constructs, several studies are taking place across the globe.
Very recently, academia started to approach the issue of Muslim women with critical clarity, looking at its socio-historical background. Muslim women movements that became active after 1980’s in different parts of the world have helped to bring about a phenomenal change in the life sphere of Muslim women. These movements have played a significant role in altering the course of debates on Muslim women.
Post structuralism and post colonial readings have significant role in developing the scholarship on Muslim women.
However, Indian academia has largely obliterated such understandings and debates and still takes keen interest to side with the patriarchal position over Muslim women by imposing victim status upon them. It is in this context the colloquium gains relevance.
Those interested are invited to be part of this colloquium. Selected papers will be published in the journal to be released following the colloquium.
Papers on the following themes dealing with women are welcome:
1. Theology, hermeneutics
2. Epistemology and question of authority
3. Identity, Representation
4. Revisiting the political context: decolonial and critical approaches
5. Muslim women lives
